Landscape Painters at Work - Daumier, 1862
One of my favorite drawings/print of all times. Got to see it up close when I went to visit a friend in Chicago. It made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it ..
I just couldn’t help thinking about how artists, from a certain viewpoint, really have got life figured out. That it was made in the mid 1800’s makes it that much better.

… some aftermath in my kitchen/studio while putting together the Celade, Texas show.

An oldy but a goody.. did this circa 1994 while working at Yahoo.

This was one of the avatar options (avatars were new) until I got a cease and desist letter from Dark Horse. My boss was not happy.. but I thought it was rad. -BJ Heinley

I’m messing with slime again today.. this time with my logo.

Here are some photos of initial slimeface designs. I got hung up on the word Los Mutantes (The Mutants) for some reason. Spanish-speaking mutants are somehow a little more awesome. Final typeface forms in vector are being finalized this weekend.

I’m having waaaayy to much fun doing these.

According to the Texas state comptroller, Graphic Designers, artists, photographers, illustrators and the like do have to charge taxes to their clients, but designand UI/UX professionals do not.
This is all in the state of Texas only. If you do designs for anyone whose bank account happens to reside outside of Texas, then you don’t have to charge tax. Said in a simpler way:
Graphic & Web Design = Yes, must tax client
Design Consulting, UI / UX = No, don’t tax client
Out-of-State = No, don’t tax client
The kind lady at the comptroller stated it like this: ”We don’t tax you for your opinions. Not yet.” … by this, she meant that you can design the specs for a website (consulting), but when you hand those specs off to a designer who realizes the results of the opinions, then it becomes a product, a thing… which must then be taxed.
I mentioned to her that I thought that all of design was more or less the opinion of the designer. She commented, soberly, ‘It’s not about how you define the law, but how the State of Texas defines it.’     I had to agree…
Not sure why State of Texas gives a break to everyone but other Texans, but hey..  whadayagonado?

I was given this page too, but not sure if it pertains. Figured I’d include it anyway.

Most of us need competition to tell us how fast to go.

-Seth Godin

I think this is true for artists and creatives as well. The idea of being alone in your studio or kitchen drawing is very appealing to many of us, but getting out in the world, getting involved in some competitions like grants or gallery shows (or museums, etc) is exactly what motivates many successful artists.  What you DO with that motivation is up to you, though. -BJ
